Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could devote the day to literature, art or theater as well as other activities. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a moral compass and urged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to make a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still at college. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of jurors. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to go into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. From this position she started her own PR company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Additionally, she launched several marketing and lifestyle websites, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
